I am planning to install the Windows 10 Preview 10130 version (ISO image on a DVD) on one of my computers that is running Vista (Dell Inspiron 545 Tower). Now, I know that I have to do a clean install, so I will back up the stuff that I need (pictures, etc.), with that being said, I am still a little lost in installing it. So, I want the 10 to replace my Vista. I will describe as to how I would do it and ask questions, as I do not know if it is correct: 1. I back up the stuff I need on the DVDs 2. I burn an ISO Image of 10 Preview to a DVD 3.
Download and update your Dell Inspiron 545 motherboard BIOS - DELLINSP545 to the latest version.
I boot the DVD from BIOS 4. I choose to do a Custom Install 5. It asks me about partitions and this is where I get lost a little. So, there is a recovery partition (D) which is how my computer was shippaed out back in 2009, and of course the main partition (C). Here are the questions, When I get to this step, do I have to format the C Partition (which is where the 10 is going), and can I leave my recovery Partition (D) in case I want to go back to Vista (I also have a recovery DVD from the manufacturer)?
Once I am done with that, Windows 10 preview should start to clean install? Once all installs and there are no issues, it will trn on and go to the desktop screen. At that point I can go download all of the drivers necessary? (Video, Audio and such) 8.
I can start using the system now. Does this seem to be the correct way doing this? Also, I have a question as to is my processor and motherboard compatible with Windows 10 (Processor- Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz that has Instructions as follows MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, EM64T all these are from CPU-Z, the NX or XD or Execute Disable Bit as per Intel website is supported and from what I have seen most of the time you have to turn it on on your own in BIOS? (, and the PAE I am not sure (how do I go about finding that out?), Motherboard is Dell/Intel 0N826N A00 (A2 Rev. for Chipset and 02 for Southbridge). Bios is Dell version A05.
I have 8 GBs of RAM (GDDR2), and Radeon R7 250 1GDB GDDR5. From what I have read is that the 10 Preview will check anyway, but I just want make sure. Speaking of Bios, I know that you can either install 10 Preview with UEFI or with BIOS, how would I install it, if I want to stay with BIOS? That is all for now, if I have any other questions I will post them here. And if you have any questions, just ask, I will be more than glad to give you more info. Thank you in advance for your help. If I were trying to do that, install under BIOS, I suppose I would just try the Tom's hardware method, if it doesn't work you'll likely get an error message, then copy those error messages and google 'em and see if you can make some sense of it. Sometimes you have to figure out stuff by doing it and employing a trial and error process. Don't wait 'till you figure it out, or you never get there.
Boot into BIOS and start the install. It possible even likely that the installer will be smart enough to correctly install the thing, It might see that you're in BIOS and take it from there. I also recently installed Window 10 on my old Vista laptop with no problems. I don't know about UEFI but it's a HP Pavilion DV6.
Instead of going into BIOS, my laptop has an option to change boot devices (I press ESC instead of DEL). Windows 10 setup loaded from there and it was a surprisingly fast install.
You don't need to be concerned about partitions. Since you backed up your personal data, and you have a recovery disc, I would delete the partitions and format the drive. You'll have one 'Unallocated Space' which you can install Win10 and only use C. Or 'New' and add a partition for only Win10 (all installs will go to D:) The only real trouble I had was waiting for the display drivers to update.
It took a few hours and Windows Update said 'No new updates'. I was for a while concerned about having to go back to Vista.
